Artist Statement
My artistic practice is predominantly painting-based; however, I continue to experiment with installation, print, sculpture and drawing. I work with candid phone photographs and existing physical images that capture the natural, unfiltered depiction of my close family and friends interacting with domestic pets. I am intrigued by how dogs or cats are included in traditional 18th-century family portraits as accessories or afterthoughts, though sometimes as companions or part of the family.
I am fascinated by the Kitsch aesthetic and home décor. Imagine tacky porcelain cats displayed on the mantelpiece, vintage 70s floral curtains and a mismatched Persian rug. I think there is something quite nostalgic and endearing about such design choices. I want people to feel comfort from seeing these recognisable patterns in a typical gallery space.
By using tablecloth fabric and wallpapers from second-hand shops or inherited from my grandma's house, I can give my work a more domestic and personal feel. These canvases are mostly small in scale to mimic phone screens and family photo albums, and hung in a cluster arrangement to evoke a sense of intimacy and close connection.
My artwork can remind people of encounters they have had with animals throughout their lives, maybe a childhood puppy, a neighbourhood cat, or a family friend's old dog. There may be subtle feelings of pet loss and grief from seeing these painted scenes; however, I hope that through a warm and inviting colour palette, the feelings of comfort and adoration outweigh those thoughts. Think of it as a celebration or appreciation for pets of the past and present.
Connection is always key. The physical and emotional relationship between the two subjects is characterised by an enhanced and oversaturated colour palette and thick, textured brush strokes to convey the texture of fur.
